La prueba de que quizá Occidente no esté perdido sea esta noticia en el New York Times. El absurdo y el exceso tienen, aún, su lugar entre nosotros. El chino que compró la pornstar sería un simple mercader, un tendero poco sofisticado. O quizá un tipo viajado pero con gustos chabacanos.

In turn these bonuses were a ticket to a modicum of financial independence and participation in a social sphere where you don’t just go to lunch, you buy a $10,000 table at the benefit luncheon a friend is hosting.

Women who didn’t get them joked about possible sexual performance metrics. Women who received them usually retreated, demurring when pressed to discuss it further, proof to an anthropologist that a topic is taboo, culturally loaded and dense with meaning.»

Puede que lo civilizado y sofisticado sea el híbrido entre el matrimonio occidental y el negocio del chino, sofisticación que estaría tan alejada del burdo negocio de la pornostar como el mercado financiero lo está del trueque. Los wife bonus que los maridos ricos de Manhattan pagan a sus esposas ociosas de acuerdo a objetivos es un trato mucho más civilizado. Se fijan en acuerdos prenupciales y, al parecer, tienen que ver con lo bien que marcha la economía doméstica, cómo ella lleva el hogar, cómo les va a los niños en el colegio, etc. En la noticia no se menciona el sexo más que como posibilidad. Pero, digo yo, esa es una inevitable variable en la ecuación. ¿De qué humor quieres que esté él cuando tengas que negociar el importe del bonus?
A este trato le veo más futuro. Contrato fijo con incentivos. Productividad y eficacia. Tensión competitiva por ambas partes.
